The rootstocks quality is one of the fundamental parameters for the vine success rate in the nursery. That is why we give the maximal importance to the productive procedure.

For our rootstocks mother-blocks, we select exclusively soils that have not had vineyards, grapevine nurseries or rootstocks mother blocks for at least 10 years. This is a guarantee for the sanitary surety of the soil. Additionally, every 5 years, analyses are made during the vegetative phase, to test for the main viruses and the Flavescence Dorée phytoplasma.

Our agronomical choice for the cultivation of our mother-blocks is aimed both towards environmental sustainability and towards the respect of the vegetative cycle of the rootstocks. Keeping that in mind, we do not use chemical fertilizers, but primarily organic fertilizers. We strongly believe that the best rootstocks are those obtained with a correct and limited nitrogen addition.

The actual challenge we are facing and on which we have been working for some years is to eliminate the use of chemical herbicides. The results obtained so far are encouraging and our estimate is that in a couple of years, we shall be able to completely eliminate chemical herbicides.

Our rootstocks mother-blocks are equipped with Drip irrigation system to rationalize the use of hydric resources and for fertigation procedure.

Rootstocks harvesting starts always and only when there is certitude that the rootstocks plants are fully dormant. Effectively, we have been forced by the climate changes of the last decades, to reorganize our production schedule in order to follow the natural cycle of the plants. The time window for the harvesting operations has been drastically reduced: a concrete example is the rootstock harvesting; if in the past the harvesting period started in November and ended in March, our days we are forced to start in December and complete the harvest by February.

The preparation of harvested rootstocks is done either manually or mechanically, depending on the specificities of each variety and the client’s request. We can provide rootstocks of different lengths, with specific calibres, disbudded manually or mechanically.

The interval that separates the harvesting from the preparation can only last a couple of days. This is a crucial element for guarantying rootstocks freshness and his optimal quality. To execute those tasks in such a short time, we have teams specialized only in harvesting and others only in preparing rootstocks.

To preserve the freshness of the material thus prepared, we either proceed to immediate delivery, or we stock the rootstocks in our cold stores. Our fleet of vehicles are instrumental in the on-time and capillary delivery.
